Class Philosophy

  • The class is based on activities and not lectures. This requires students to be responsible, follow directions, and work hard.

  • Avoid saying, "I don't understand". Instead, think about what you don't understand precisely.

  • Learn and work collaboratively.

  • I try to balance challenge and struggle with information and assistance

  • I celebrate different ways to solve problems

  • Math Stations provide a collaborative and varied learning environment

    • Instruction and Assessment Center

      • The Instruction and Assessment Center is where students work with the teacher in very small groups. They learn and review concepts and confirm their understanding by completing thought-provoking problems.

    • Challenge Center

      • The Challenge Center is where students apply what they have learned as they play math games. An example of a game is Equate, which is similar to Scrabble and students create arithmetic expressions. During the course of these specially-designed games, students do a greater number of more complicated problems than a worksheet.

    • Computer Center

      • The Computer Center is where students use a computer to drill and play math games. They reinforce concepts they have previously learned and track their individual progress.
